Arizona leadoff hitter Adam Jones drove the game's third pitch from Matt Strahm into the left field stands Monday night, triggering a 15-hit attack that led the Diamondbacks to a 10-3 victory over the host San Diego Padres.

David Peralta and Ketel Marte each had three hits in five at-bats for the Diamondbacks. Marte scored three runs and had an RBI and a stolen base. Peralta had two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Nick Ahmed drove in two runs.

Jones and Christian Walker also had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks.

The benefactor of the Diamondbacks' offensive explosion was right-hander Merrill Kelly, who was making his major league debut after pitching the past four seasons in South Korea. Kelly (1-0) gave up three runs on three hits in his sixth and final inning after shutting out the Padres on two hits over the first five innings.

The last hit allowed by Kelly was also the first home run by 20-year-old rookie Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who pulled a 395-foot drive into the far corner of the Western Metal Supply Co. building in left. The two-run shot made Tatis the second-youngest Padre (to Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar Jr.) ever to homer.

Jones, a native of San Diego, spotted Strahm two strikes before driving the left-hander's third pitch 378 feet into the left field stands. It was Jones' third homer of the season and the seventh game-opening homer of his career.

The Diamondbacks added a second run in the first on back-to-back one-out doubles by Wilmer Flores and Peralta. Arizona added a run in the second on a bases-loaded single by Eduardo Escobar and two more in the third on a leadoff double by Peralta, an RBI single by Marte and a sacrifice fly by Nick Ahmed.

Strahm, who had a 2.05 ERA last season while pitching mostly in relief, allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings in his first 2019 start.

The Diamondbacks scored four runs (three earned) in the fifth against left-handed reliever Robbie Erlin to build a 9-0 lead.

Jon Duplantier made his major league debut in relief of Kelly and allowed one hit over three scoreless innings to earn the save.
