Sean Manaea matched his season high of 11 strikeouts while tossing 6 2/3 solid innings to help the New York Mets notch an 8-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night at Phoenix.
Pete Alonso homered, Jeff McNeil had two RBIs and Brandon Nimmo had three hits as New York won for the seventh time in 11 games. The Mets are three games behind the Atlanta Braves for the National League's final wild-card spot.
Manaea (10-5) served up two homers in the seventh inning after allowing just one hit over the first six innings. Overall, he gave up three runs and four hits while issuing no walks.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a solo homer and Corbin Carroll had a two-run shot for the Diamondbacks, who lost for just the seventh time in their past 31 games.
The setback ended Arizona's second six-game winning streak of the month. The Diamondbacks are in a virtual tie for the top wild-card spot in the NL with the San Diego Padres.
Brandon Pfaadt (8-7) was charged with eight runs (six earned) and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked one.
Pfaadt started after Arizona pushed left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez back a day.
Alonso slammed Pfaadt's first pitch of the second inning over the wall in right-center to start the scoring. It was his 28th homer of the season.
The Mets added an unearned run later in the inning when McNeil grounded into a forceout.
New York sent 12 batters to the plate during a six-run, fifth-inning uprising.
McNeil doubled and scored on Francisco Alvarez's single. Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos followed with singles, and Alvarez scored from third on the latter base hit to make it 4-0.
Nimmo singled to load the bases. After Alonso was called out on strikes, Jesse Winker hit a sacrifice fly to score Lindor. J.D. Martinez then reached on an infield single to load the bases and end Pfaadt's night.
Jordan Montgomery entered the game and hit Tyrone Taylor with a pitch and walked McNeil to force in two more runs. Alvarez's chopper was then misplayed by Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo for an error as Martinez scored the inning's final run.
Gurriel led off the seventh with a blast to left for his 16th homer of the season. Josh Bell followed with a single and, two outs later, Carroll sent a 437-foot blast over the fence in center to end Manaea's night. It was Carroll's 15th homer of the season.
