Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-5 with a home run, and the New York Yankees held on for a 5-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night in Minneapolis.
Alex Verdugo hit a two-run double for New York, which won the opener of the three-game series. Anthony Volpe finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Ryan Jeffers hit a solo homer for Minnesota's only run.
Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon (4-2) earned the victory for his second consecutive start. He allowed one run on six hits in six-plus innings, walking none and striking out six.
Twins right-hander Chris Paddack (4-2) gave up five runs on 12 hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out four.
The loss snapped a four-start winning streak for Paddack. His 12 hits allowed matched his season high on April 16, when he gave up a dozen hits against the Baltimore Orioles in his third start of the season.
Yankees relievers Ian Hamilton and Clay Holmes combined for three scoreless innings to secure the victory.
Minnesota opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Jeffers hit a leadoff blast an estimated 414 feet to left-center field for his 10th homer of the season.
The Yankees responded with two runs in the top of the second to grab a 2-1 lead. Oswaldo Cabrera drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field, and Volpe followed with an RBI double to left.
Stanton added a solo shot in the third to increase New York's lead to 3-1. It was his ninth homer of the season and his third in the past six games.
In the fourth, Verdugo delivered a two-run double to center, scoring Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, to make it 5-1.
Minnesota threatened in the seventh with runners on first and second and no outs. But Christian Vazquez flied out to right, and Max Kepler and Jeffers each struck out looking to squander the opportunity.
