Rhys Hoskins homered, walked and scored two runs, Zack Wheeler tossed seven scoreless innings and the host Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres 3-0 on Wednesday.

Wheeler (2-3) gave up four hits while striking out nine and walking none. Jose Alvarado fanned two in a perfect eighth inning, and Corey Knebel needed only four pitches to navigate a 1-2-3 ninth and record his eighth save in 10 opportunities.

The Padres had only one at-bat with a runner in scoring position and left three on base.

Padres starter Blake Snell (0-1) lasted only 3 2/3 innings in his first start of the season while coming back from an adductor injury. Snell, who threw 34 pitches in the first inning alone, allowed three hits and three runs to go along with five strikeouts and three walks.

The Phillies went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning when J.T. Realmuto snapped an 0-for-13 slump with an RBI single to center field.

Hoskins blasted a homer to left to lead off the third for a 2-0 advantage.

In the fourth, Odubel Herrera ripped an RBI double down the first base line to score Kyle Schwarber, who had walked, for a 3-0 lead.

After Wheeler retired 11 straight batters, Jake Cronenworth doubled with two outs in the sixth. However, Ha-Seong Kim struck out swinging to end the inning.

Manny Machado opened the San Diego seventh with a single and Eric Hosmer flied out to deep right. Luke Voit then struck out and Wil Myers flied out, ending Wheeler's night.

Philadelphia second baseman Jean Segura went 0-for-4 to halt his 13-game hitting streak.

Phillies star Bryce Harper sat out for a third straight game while recovering from a plasma-rich platelet injection in his right elbow. He is not expected to be able to return to the field until after the All-Star break, though he may continue serving as a designated hitter.
