Making just the 11th start of his career, 22-year-old rookie Reid Detmers pitched a no-hitter Tuesday night as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 12-0 in Anaheim, Calif.

The left-hander faced only 28 batters, one over the minimum. No Tampa Bay player reached base until Taylor Walls drew a walk in the sixth inning, but Detmers (2-1) got out of the inning by forcing Kevin Kiermaier to ground into a double play.

The closest Tampa Bay came to getting a hit came in the seventh inning, when a ground ball off Los Angeles first baseman Jared Walsh's glove was ruled an error by the official scorer.

Detmers threw 108 pitches, struck out two and walked one. Yandy Diaz hit a routine grounder to shortstop for the final out.

Asked what he thought when completing the no-hitter, Detmers said, "I don't know. I just blacked out, I don't know."

The Angels' most recent no-hitter had been a combined effort by Taylor Cole and Felix Pena in 2019 against the Seattle Mariners. The last solo no-hitter by a Los Angeles pitcher was Jered Weaver's against the Minnesota Twins in 2012.

Tuesday marked the first time the Rays had been held hitless since Seattle's Felix Hernandez did fired a perfect game against them in 2012.

Mike Trout hit two home runs and Chad Wallach hit a three-run home run in the third inning to lead the offensive explosion by the Angels.

Trout, Brandon Marsh, Jared Walsh, Andrew Velazquez and Luis Rengifo each had multiple-hit games as Los Angeles pounded out 18 hits.

Trout hit a solo home run in the second inning and added his ninth homer of the season in the eighth inning. Anthony Rendon also hit an eighth-inning home run.

It was the second straight game in which the Angels scored double-digit runs. They defeated the Rays 11-3 on Monday night.

The Angels chased Tampa Bay starter Corey Kluber, who had been solid in his last two starts, after three innings. Kluber (1-2) allowed eight runs on 11 hits.

The Rays were without outfielder Manuel Margot. The reigning American League Player of the Week was held out after sustaining a hamstring injury in Monday night's game.
