Jameson Taillon pitched effectively into the sixth inning, Gleyber Torres homered for the second straight game and the host New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 9-1 Sunday night.
The Yankees beat Boston for the second straight time after losing the first seven meetings this season. They also won for the seventh time in 10 games since losing the first game of a doubleheader with the New York Mets on July 4.
Taillon (5-4) allowed four hits in 5 1/3 innings and won his fourth straight decision. Taillon struck out three and walked two and threw 56 of his 91 pitches for strikes.
Taillon allowed two runs or less for the fifth time in six starts. He took a two-hit shutout into the sixth and exited after Xander Bogaerts doubled to put runners at second and third.
Torres, who has slumped most of the season, hit his fifth homer leading off the second against Boston left-hander Martin Perez (7-6) when he hit an 0-2 fastball into the left field seats. Before homering in the sixth inning Saturday, Torres had not homered since June 5.
Rougned Odor hit a two-run homer on Sunday while Giancarlo Stanton and Greg Allen also contributed RBIs for the fourth-place Yankees, who moved within seven games of first-place Boston in the A.L. East. Ryan LaMarre hit a two-run homer in the eighth and reached base three times.
Stanton beat out a double-play grounder in the third on a play that resulted in Boston first baseman Christian Arroyo straining his left hamstring.
Allen gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning after Odor opened the inning with a drag bunt single and took third on a base hit by LaMarre.
Odor homered in the seventh before Torres and Chris Gittens drew bases-loaded walks later in the 32-minute inning when the Yankees sent 10 men to the plate.
Perez was charged with three runs on five hits in four-plus innings and was lifted after putting two runners on to start the fifth.
Hunter Renfroe hit an RBI single in the eighth for the Red Sox, who lost for the sixth time in eight games.
Chad Green followed Taillon and got three of his five outs via strikeouts. Zack Britton and Lucas Luetge combined to pitch the eighth, and Aroldis Chapman finished up with a perfect ninth.
