Steven Souza Jr. hit a solo homer in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie and the Los Angeles Dodgers held on for a 3-0 win against Arizona on Friday in Phoenix, sending the Diamondbacks to their 15th loss in a row.
In the opener of a three-game series, Dodgers right-hander Trevor Bauer (7-5) threw seven shutout innings, allowing three hits, striking out eight and walking three.
Arizona starter Caleb Smith gave up one hit over six scoreless innings, striking out five and walking four.
Josh Rojas doubled and walked twice for Arizona.
The Dodgers were coming off a 2-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday, the first time they had been shut out since September 2019, and had not scored in 16 consecutive innings when Joe Mantiply (0-2) began the eighth for the Diamondbacks.
Leading off, Souza sent a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left for a 1-0 lead.
Mantiply then walked Gavin Lux and gave up a double to pinch hitter Andy Burns. Stefan Crichton replaced Mantiply and gave up a sacrifice fly to Mookie Betts before later balking home Lux to make it 3-0.
Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 17th save as Los Angeles won for the eighth time in 10 games. Each team finished with three hits.
Both teams put their leadoff batters on base in the first inning. Smith walked two batters in the first, but avoided any further trouble.
Bauer gave up a leadoff double to Rojas but retired the next three batters to strand him at second.
Rojas got into scoring position in the third when he walked with two outs and stole second, but Bauer got Ketel Marte to line out to second to end the inning.
The Diamondbacks also had two runners on with two outs in the fourth, but Carson Kelly flied out deep to left to end the threat.
Rojas walked again with two outs in the fifth, and Marte followed with a single to put runners on first and second, but Eduardo Escobar fouled out to third to end the inning.
