Shohei Ohtani's two-run homer off Matt Barnes with two outs in the ninth inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-5 victory over the host Boston Red Sox on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Sox were one out away from completing a three-game sweep when Mike Trout stepped to the plate to face Barnes (1-1), who entered the game 9-for-9 in save opportunities.

Trout, who was 0-for-15 on the trip and hitless in his last 18 at-bats overall, blooped a single into shallow right center field. Barnes' first pitch to Ohtani was a 96-mph fastball that the slugger wrapped around the right-field foul pole to give the Angels the lead.

Ohtani's homer was his 12th of the season.

Mike Mayers, the last of seven Angels pitchers, struck out three batters in the ninth to close it out and earn his second save of the season.

Boston got a boost from the bottom of its lineup, as No. 8 hitter Kevin Plawecki and No. 9 hitter Jonathan Arauz each had two hits, including a home run from Plawecki. Rafael Devers belted a three-run shot that gave the Red Sox a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning.

The Angels jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second off Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi, getting four hits, a hit-batter and a walk in the inning.

Anthony Rendon was hit by a pitch to lead off the second, then went to third on a double by Jared Walsh. Taylor Ward followed with an RBI single, and Phil Gosselin followed two batters later with an RBI double that made it 2-0.

Backup catcher Drew Butera, with one hit all season entering the game, had a two-run single to put Los Angeles up 4-0.

Meanwhile, Angels starter Jose Quintana appeared determined to get his first win of the season. He retired the first seven batters he faced before Plawecki singled with one out in the third, and Arauz followed with an RBI double to cut the Angels' lead to 4-1.

Quintana took the lead into the fifth inning before Plawecki got to him again with a solo homer. Arauz then reached on an infield single to spell the end of the day for Quintana.

Aaron Slegers replaced Quintana but could not hold the lead, giving up a single to Michael Chavis and the three-run homer by Devers to put Boston on top 5-4.

Reliever Raisel Iglesias (2-2) got the win after tossing one scoreless inning for the Angels.
