Chase Anderson tossed five shutout innings for his first win in five starts as the host Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Mets 2-1 on Friday.

The Phillies, who managed only three hits, scored two unearned runs on a passed ball by James McCann in the second inning to secure the victory.

Sam Coonrod pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save in three opportunities.

Phillies manager Joe Girardi missed Friday's game so he could attend his daughter's college graduation. The Phillies were managed by bench coach Rob Thomson.

The Phillies played without Bryce Harper, who was hit in the face on Wednesday by Genesis Cabrera of the St. Louis Cardinals. Didi Gregorius was also placed on the injured list and J.T. Realmuto was held out of the starting lineup with a sore left hand.

Anderson (1-3) allowed five hits and no runs, struck out six and walked two.

J.D. Davis had a pair of hits for the Mets, who were 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Mets starter Marcus Stroman (3-2) gave up three hits and two runs, both unearned, in five innings. He struck out eight and walked one.

The Phillies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second after Anderson struck out and reached first base on a passed ball by McCann. Brad Miller and Andrew Knapp each scampered home.

The Mets had three hits through the first four -- one single and one double by Davis and a double by Stroman.

New York placed runners on second and third with one out to open the sixth. Dominic Smith, who had been 0-for-14, followed with an RBI single to left to close within 2-1. McCann grounded into a double play to end the inning.

In the seventh, the Phillies loaded the bases with two outs, and Andrew McCutchen struck out looking against Jeurys Familia.

Jeff McNeil reached second with two outs in the eighth and Davis walked. Jose Alvarado tossed a wild pitch and the runners moved up. Smith struck out swinging to end the threat and both benches cleared as Alvarado and Smith appeared to be verbally sparring.
