The San Diego Padres got double-Kellyed on Tuesday night in Phoenix.
Catcher Carson Kelly capped a three-run sixth inning with a two-run homer and right-hander Merrill Kelly held San Diego to one run on four hits over six innings to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-1 win.
It was a tough evening for Padres starter Chris Paddack (1-3).
Before the game, a scoring change by Major League Baseball tacked four earned runs onto the line in his most recent start. Then the Diamondbacks scored their first two runs in the second inning when 2020 Gold Glove center fielder Trent Grisham dropped what would have been an inning-ending fly for a three-base, two-run error to break a scoreless tie.
Carson Kelly singled with one out in the second and moved to second on Nick Ahmed's two-out, high-hop single to right. Nick Heath then hit a high fly to left-center. Grisham and left fielder Jurickson Profar converged on the ball with both in position to make the catch, but Grisham had the ball bounce off the tip of the glove.
The Padres scored their only run off Merrill Kelly (2-2) in the sixth. Fernando Tatis Jr. opened the inning with a double, advanced to third on Grisham's flyout to deep right and scored on Manny Machado's grounder to third.
Paddack pitched into the sixth for the first time in five starts this year, but he didn't get out of the inning.
Kole Calhoun opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third -- but then came out of the game with an undisclosed injury. David Peralta followed with a single to drive home pinch runner Josh Rojas to make it 3-1. Carson Kelly then connected off Paddack for his sixth homer.
Merrill Kelly issued two walks while striking out five. Relievers Caleb Smith, J.B Bukauskas and Taylor Clarke retired nine of the 10 Padres they faced to close out the win.
Paddack gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
