Dillon Peters, recalled from Triple-A prior to the game, pitched five shutout innings as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the host Seattle Mariners 9-3 Sunday afternoon.
Albert Pujols, Brian Goodwin, Mike Trout and Dustin Garneau homered for the Angels, who took two of three games in the series and are 7-3 since the All-Star break.
Dee Gordon went 3 for 4 for the Mariners, who dropped to 1-8 in their past nine games.
Peters (2-0) was recalled from Salt Lake to start for fellow left-hander Andrew Heaney, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation.
Peters allowed four hits, walked two and struck out four. It was his first start of the season after making four relief appearances, three against the Mariners. Both of his wins this season have come against Seattle.
Mariners rookie left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (4-7) went five innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He dropped to 1-3 against the Angels.
Pujols opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo shot to right field, his 15th of the season.
That was one of only two hits Kikuchi allowed through the first 3 2/3 innings before the Angels put together a two-out rally. Pujols got that going with an infield single. Goodwin then hit a two-run shot to left-center field, his eighth. Garneau reached on an infield single and Luis Rengifo hit a run-scoring triple to right. David Fletcher's infield single brought home Rengifo to make it 5-0.
The Angels added to their lead in the fifth as Shohei Ohtani and Justin Upton led off with back-to-back doubles. Upton moved to third on a groundout and scored on Pujols' sacrifice fly.
Trout led off the seventh with his American League-leading 32nd homer off right-hander Erik Swanson.
The Mariners broke the shutout bid in the bottom of the inning off left-hander Adalberto Mejia, whom the Angels claimed off waivers Saturday from Minnesota. With one out, Austin Nola and Gordon singled and Mallex Smith followed with a run-scoring double.
Garneau hit a solo shot in the eighth, his second, off right-hander Matt Festa.
The Mariners scored twice in the ninth off right-hander Trevor Cahill, on an RBI single by Domingo Santana and a bases-loaded wild pitch.
