Pinch hitter Marco Hernandez homered with one out in the top of the ninth inning and the visiting Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 8-7 on Thursday night.

It was the second homer of the season for Hernandez, who batted for Sandy Leon, and the second homer allowed this season by Toronto closer Ken Giles (1-2).

Michael Chavis hit a three-run homer and Rafael Devers hit a solo shot for the Red Sox, who overcame a 6-1 deficit to take a 7-6 lead in the sixth in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Brandon Workman (8-1) allowed doubles to Danny Jansen and Eric Sogard in the bottom of the eighth as the Blue Jays tied the score at 7. Workman pitched around two walks in the ninth.

Jansen also homered twice for the Blue Jays, giving him eight for the season, and Freddy Galvis added a two-run blast.

Boston starter Hector Velazquez allowed three runs, five hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Devers extended his hit streak to eight games with his 15th homer this season in the first inning against opener Derek Law, who allowed two hits in two-thirds of an inning before Thomas Pannone replaced him.

Pannone, who allowed four hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings, was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo when it was decided that Marcus Stroman would miss the start with a left shoulder pectoral cramp.

The Blue Jays scored twice in the bottom of the first against Velazquez. Galvis doubled, Cavan Biggio and Justin Smoak walked and Rowdy Tellez hit a two-run single.

Jansen homered to lead off the bottom of the second. He homered again to lead off a three-run fourth against Colten Brewer. Brandon Drury singled and Galvis hit his 15th homer of the season and Toronto led 6-1.

The Red Sox scored six in the sixth. Mookie Betts walked, took third on a single by Devers and scored on a single by Xander Bogaerts. J.D. Martinez delivered an RBI single.

Tim Mayza replaced Pannone and walked Christian Vazquez with one out to load the bases. Jackie Bradley Jr.'s grounder to shortstop forced Vazquez and scored Bogaerts. Chavis then hit his 15th homer of the season.

Jacob Waguespack, who pitched five innings Wednesday to earn his first major league victory, was optioned to Buffalo to make room for Pannone.
