Clint Frazier hit a solo homer, and Brett Gardner followed with a two-run homer in the second inning as the New York Yankees beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 Monday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Playing in front of their second sellout crowd of the season, the Yankees won for the 12th time in 14 games and 27th time in 35 games since April 19 by overcoming an early two-run deficit against Matt Strahm (2-4), who struck out a career-high 10 hitters.

Frazier made it a one-run game by hammering a 1-2 slider from Strahm into the seats. Following Frazier's 415-foot drive, Gio Urshela drew a walk, and two batters later, Gardner lifted the first pitch he saw over the fence.

New York's Gary Sanchez homered in the eighth inning after striking out in his first three at-bats. The Yankees added their fifth run when Gleyber Torres followed Sanchez's 16th homer with a double before scoring on a fielding error by right fielder Franmil Reyes, who overran Cameron Maybin's single.

Josh Naylor and Austin Hedges hit RBI doubles in the second inning for the Padres, who made their first trip to the current Yankee Stadium, to give them a 2-0 lead. The Padres missed a chance at a bigger inning when they had runners at second and third and Wil Myers tried to score on a ground ball to first but was thrown out at the plate.

Manny Machado, who met with the Yankees in free agency, went 1-for-4 with a double off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth in his first appearance in the Bronx since signing a 10-year, $300 million deal with San Diego in February. He heard boos before each plate appearance and chants of "Overrated, Overrated" by some fans.

The Padres lost their second straight following a five-game winning streak.

The Yankees used Chad Green as the opener for the third time this year and he struck out the side on 14 pitches in the first inning. David Hale (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits in four innings, and other four relievers finished the win.

Adam Ottavino retired Machado on a double-play grounder on a close play in a scoreless sixth, Tommy Kahnle fanned two in a hitless seventh, and Zack Britton tossed a perfect eighth. Chapman worked around Machado's double and tossed a scoreless ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances.

Strahm allowed three runs on four hits in six innings.
