Francisco Lindor hit two home runs and had four RBIs in a four-hit game, Jason Kipnis hit a three-run homer and the visiting Cleveland Indians defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 9-4 Thursday night.
Lindor hit solo home runs in his first two at-bats and then capped a three-run fifth inning with a two-run, go-ahead single in the opener of a four-game series. Edwin Encarnacion added three hits.
Rowdy Tellez, making his first major league start, had three doubles for Toronto.
Cleveland starter Shane Bieber (9-3) allowed four runs (three earned), seven hits and one walk while striking out six in 6 1/3 innings.
Toronto starter Sam Gaviglio (3-8) allowed five runs and six hits and had four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Lindor started the game with his seventh leadoff homer this season, tying the club record.
The Indians shortstop hit homer No. 33 with two outs in the third inning, giving him the eighth multi-homer game of his career.
The Blue Jays scored four runs in the fourth.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. led off with a single, Kendrys Morales walked and, with one out, Tellez hit an RBI double. It was his second double of the game and his third in as many major league at-bats. Tellez is the first player in the live ball era with extra-base hits in his first three big league at-bats, according to STATS.
Tellez doubled as a pinch hitter on Wednesday in his first major league plate appearance.
Teoscar Hernandez hit a two-run double and scored on an error by Cleveland first baseman Yonder Alonso on a grounder by Aledmys Diaz to make it 4-2.
After its rally in the fifth, Cleveland improved its lead to 6-4 in the sixth. Greg Allen hit an RBI double to drive in Encarnacion.
Cody Allen pitched around a walk and the third double of the game by Tellez in the eighth.
Kipnis hit his 15th homer of the season against Mark Leiter Jr. in the ninth
Toronto catcher Reese McGuire doubled in the ninth, his first major league hit in his debut, against Dan Otero. Randal Grichuk singled, but Devon Travis grounded into a double play to end the game.
