Colin Moran's second grand slam of the season was one of three homers allowed by Padres starter Tyson Ross Sunday afternoon as the Pirates scored a 7-5 win in San Diego in the rubber match of a three-game series.
Corey Dickerson and Elias Diaz also homered for the Pirates, while Hunter Renfroe homered for the Padres in a 3 ½-hour marathon that numbered 13 pitchers, 18 hits, 10 walks, five mound visits, 16 stranded runners and two errors.
Right-handed reliever Kyle Crick (1-1) was credited with the win for the Pirates. Left-handed closer Felipe Vazquez was credited with his 17th save.
Ross (5-6) allowed a season-high seven runs on seven hits and three walks in five-plus innings in his worst start of the season to take the loss. Pirates' right-handed starter Jameson Taillon gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
Dickerson's sixth homer of the season gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
But the Padres took a 3-1 lead. They scored two runs in the bottom of the second on two walks, an RBI single by A.J. Ellis and a sacrifice fly by Tyson Ross. Renfroe doubled home the Padres' third run in the third, after the third walk issued by Taillon.
Diaz cut the Padres lead to one with a RBI double in the fourth.
The Pirates' game-winning, fifth-inning rally started with two out and no one on.
Austin Meadows doubled. Josh Bell drew a walk. Then Josh Harrison loaded the bases with a swinging bunt single to set the stage for Moran -- who pulled a Ross fastball into the first rows in right field at Petco Park to give the Pirates a 6-3 lead.
The Pirates still held a three-run lead after Renfroe and Diaz exchanged homers. The Padres scored again in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI infield single but failed to score again after having the bases loaded with one out. The Padres stranded a total of 11 runners, including at least one in each of the first seven innings.
