Jose Berrios struck out a career-high 12 batters during seven shutout innings as the Minnesota Twins snapped the Texas Rangers' seven-game win streak with a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn.
Berrios (8-5) allowed just three hits in picking up his fifth win in his last six decisions. He walked two and left after throwing 107 pitches, 70 of which were strikes.
Robbie Grossman and Eddie Rosario each had two hits for the Twins, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Fernando Rodney struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his 17th save.
Bartolo Colon (4-5) was denied a chance to tie Dennis Martinez (245) for most career wins by a Latin American born pitcher despite allowing just seven hits and two runs over seven innings. He walked one and struck out five.
Grossman hit a leadoff double in the fifth that one-hopped the fence in dead center, advanced to third on a long flyout by Ehire Adrianza and then scored on a broken-bat single by catcher Bobby Wilson to give the Twins a 1-0 lead in the fifth.
Grossman made it 2-0 in the sixth with a two-out single, driving in Rosario, who had opened the inning with a single.
Shin-Soo Choo extended his consecutive on-base games streak to 37 games with a double and walk, tying Michael Young (2005) for the fifth longest single-season streak in Rangers' history. Julio Franco holds the team record with a 46-gamer in 1993.
Choo lined the first pitch of the game off the top of the fence in left-center, just missing a home run by about two feet and settling for a double. Two outs later, Adrian Beltre, playing on the 20-year anniversary of his major league debut, singled to shallow left but Choo elected to stop at third. Berrios then struck out Rougned Odor swinging to end the threat.
