MINNEAPOLIS -- A night after cruising to a 16-0 romp, the Minnesota Twins came through in a pressure situation.

The home run again played a big part.

Eddie Rosario's two-out, two-run homer in the 10th inning sent Minnesota to a 3-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.

Joe Mauer hit a one-out single, and Rosario followed with a towering homer to right field off rookie right-hander Phil Maton on a 2-0 count.

"Hell, yeah," Rosario said of embracing the situation. "It's the moment for every player like that."

The Twins kept their two-game lead over the Los Angeles Angels for the second wild-card spot in the American League with their fourth walk-off win of the season. It was Rosario's 23rd homer of the season and his first career walk-off hit.

"Rosie, he's been incredible the majority of the season," Minnesota manager Paul Molitor said. "He swung about as hard as he could, and he hit it about as far as he could. But it was a nice way to end the game, a good win."

Matt Belisle (2-2) pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings for the Twins (76-69), who have won two in a row and five of their past seven games. Minnesota had lost six of its previous seven one-run games.

Maton (3-1) gave up both hits in the 10th.

"It's not the greatest located pitch right there," San Diego manager Andy Green said. "He's a very good fastball hitter there. I think if we probably had it to do over again ... we'll live to face Buxton and keep going, and spinning and see what happens. But Rosario turns fastballs around as well as anybody, and that was a fastball kind of where he wants it more than anything. So, you pay the price in this league if you miss spots."

Both teams had plenty of chances in the late innings. The Padres left two runners on after Austin Hedges hit his 17th homer of the year in the eighth to tie the score. San Diego stranded two more in the eighth.

The Twins had the bases loaded with no outs in the seventh, but Robbie Grossman hit into a 6-2-3 double play and Brian Dozier struck out. Minnesota then left another two runners on in the eighth against Brad Hand.

Twins starter Ervin Santana and Padres rookie right-hander Dinelson Lamet provided an early pitching duel.

Santana was an All-Star for the Twins this year and leads the league in shutouts, including one in San Diego earlier this season.

A night after the Twins had their way, including hitting homers in each of the first seven innings, Lamet continued his strong run. Lamet entered with a 2.55 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 53 innings in his previous nine starts.

Lamet pitched six innings, giving up one run, five hits and two walks. He struck out five batters.

"That's something I was thinking about," Lamet said about facing the Twins after their big Tuesday night win. "I was visualizing and imagining what it would be like to face those guys, and I knew it would be a tall task for me because I've had some trouble against lefties over the course of the year. I just really thought about it, really visualized what I was trying to do and knew I would have to attack today early with my sinker. Get up in the count early and go right after hitters."

Santana got out of trouble in the second inning when he stranded Wil Myers and Erick Aybar on second and third.

The Twins scraped a run across in the bottom of the inning against Lamet. Rosario doubled and scored on a wild pitch and throwing error by Hedges.

"We throw the ball away in that situation, you give up a run, and he pretty much shut them down the rest of the way," Green said.

Santana finished six scoreless innings with three hits allowed and seven strikeouts.

"We believe in ourselves, from the beginning to now," Santana said. "I know there's a lot of people that don't believe in us, but we just have in our mind to try to get a win at a time, one day at a time, and see what happens."

NOTES: Minnesota 3B Miguel Sano (left shin stress reaction) took batting practice but again didn't do any running after feeling soreness in his leg. Manager Paul Molitor had expressed a little bit of optimism a day earlier and said he is progressing, but he said Sano's return is not "imminent." ... San Diego OF Jose Pirela was out of the lineup for a second straight day with a sprained left finger. Andy Green said Pirela was feeling better, and the manager was optimistic Pirela would be able to return to the lineup Friday in Colorado. Pirela pinch-ran for Hector Sanchez in the ninth inning and was thrown out trying to steal. ... The Twins activated LHP Adalberto Mejia (left arm brachialis strain) from the disabled list before the game and announced he would start Saturday against Toronto.
