NEW YORK -- The postgame routine for new players who have big nights for the New York Yankees is to check their phones for several text messages and calls, exchange a ball with some fans for souvenirs and answer many questions from a crowd of reporters.

On Wednesday, Chris Parmelee experienced it against an opponent he grew up watching.

Parmelee made his first start for the Yankees and homered in consecutive at-bats and New York scored four runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings of a 12-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

"I don't think it's really sunk in yet," Parmelee said.

Parmelee joined the Yankees as a minor league free agent in February and batted .252 with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. The native of Long Beach, Calif., was promoted to the majors Saturday when Mark Teixeira went on the disabled list with a right knee injury but had only made appearances as late-inning defensive replacements.

"It's very difficult when you come from the minor leagues and sometimes when you not playing every day and you get the opportunity, you get the most out of it," New York right fielder Carlos Beltran said. "So today was great to see a guy come in and take advantage of being able to play and at the same time being able to have a great day for us."

He was inserted into the lineup because he was 5-for-12 off Jered Weaver and added to it with a double in the fourth before getting his third career multi home run game.

"He had a tremendous night for us," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

With the Yankees trailing 5-4, Parmelee drove a 1-1 breaking ball from Weaver into the second deck in right field. A fan caught the ball and before conducting his first big postgame interview Parmelee exchanged some memorabilia for the ball.

The second home run came with nobody out in the seventh and the Yankees leading 8-5. Parmelee drove a 2-1 pitch from left-hander Greg Mahle into the right-center field seats.

"It was kind of down in the zone and I was able to stay through it, stay through the ball and that was kind of my mindset," Parmelee said of the second home run. "Any hook right there and the ball goes foul. So I was trying to do my best to stay inside the ball and I kind of took out my nine-iron on that one, I guess."

While Parmelee had his first big night with the Yankees, Beltran added more contributions. He had three hits, including a tiebreaking double off Jose Alvarez in the sixth and a two-run home run in the seventh off Mahle.

Beltran has driven in eight of New York's 23 runs against the Angels and has homered in three straight games for the 11th time in his career.

"He's been so big for this offense," Girardi said. "Just big hit after big hit after big hit. He's solidified our third spot in the order, he's done a great job."

The Yankees scored double-digit runs for the third time this season and tied a season high with 17 hits en route to their eighth consecutive home victory over Los Angeles.

Besides the big nights from Parmelee (3-for-5) and Beltran (3-for-4), Brett Gardner had three hits and drove in two runs, while Jacoby Ellsbury homered and reached base four times. Alex Rodriguez contributed two hits, including an RBI single, and Brian McCann added a two-run double in the sixth.

Mike Trout homered and had an RBI double in a three-hit game for the Angels, and Albert Pujols had an RBI double. Gregorio Petit hit a two-run home run, and Jeffry Marte added a solo shot for Los Angeles, which has dropped 14 of its last 17 games in New York.

"We need to score runs," Trout said after the Angels had 14 hits. "We have an offensive approach to try and score runs. We tried to take advantage of them,"

New York's Nathan Eovaldi allowed five runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Anthony Swarzak (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and picked up the win in his first appearance for the Yankees.

Weaver allowed six runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings and feel to 3-5 in nine career starts in New York.

"Obviously I haven't fared too well at this stadium over the years, but I don't think you can really change anything," Weaver said. "You still got to pitch the way you pitch and hopefully this miss them enough that they don't go out. It wasn't the case tonight."

NOTES: Angels LHP Tyler Skaggs (shoulder) pitched five innings at extended spring training in Arizona on Wednesday and will make another start there before resuming his rehab assignment. ... 1B Chris Parmelee is the fifth player to start at first base for the Yankees this year. ... C Gary Sanchez, who was briefly with New York on May 13, has been taking ground balls at first base with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while he recovers from a thumb injury. ... The Angels have not announced a starting pitcher for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Indians, but LHP David Huff is a candidate.
