ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals started a season-long 11-game homestand Monday night with bad news on and off the field.

After announcing that ace starter Adam Wainwright would miss the season's remainder with a torn Achilles, St. Louis couldn't solve Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels and absorbed a 4-1 loss at Busch Stadium.

Hamels (1-2) fanned a season-high nine over seven innings, allowing just four hits and a run while walking four, one intentionally. Relievers Ken Giles and Jonathan Papelbon picked up the last six outs, with Papelbon registering his fifth save.

John Lackey (1-1) drew the loss, yielding nine hits and three runs over seven innings with a walk and a strikeout.

Lackey ran into two-out trouble in the seventh, giving up a two-run double to left fielder Ben Revere -- the ball landing just inside the foul line -- and then an RBI single to center fielder Odubel Herrera.

Philadelphia (8-12) tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on an infield out by first baseman Darin Ruf that scored catcher Carlos Ruiz, who led off the inning with his fourth hit of the night, a double to left.

The Cardinals (12-6) dropped their second straight game, losing for just the second time in seven home games.

St. Louis broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the third with three straight two-out singles. Left fielder Matt Holliday's hit to left scored third baseman Matt Carpenter, who started the rally and then went first-to-third on shortstop Jhonny Peralta's soft liner to right.

The Cardinals filled the bases later in the inning on a walk to first baseman Matt Adams, but right fielder Mark Reynolds bounced out to second.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia picked up singles in each of the first five innings against St. Louis starter John Lackey, but never advanced a runner past second. Lackey cut off a promising fifth-inning rally by gloving a liner from Revere and doubling pitcher Cole Hamels off first.

NOTES: St. Louis announced Monday that RHP Adam Wainwright (Achilles) will undergo season-ending surgery on Thursday and will be sidelined for 9-12 months. The club has not yet decided who will take his spot in the rotation for Thursday's game. ... Philadelphia 1B Ryan Howard and 2B Chase Utley made the 1,093rd start as a duo in their careers Monday, the most of any active duo in the major league. ... Cardinals C Yadier Molina (knee) returned to the lineup after a two-game absence, but RF Jason Heyward (hamstring) did not start. Heyward said it was a planned off-day since the Phillies started LHP Cole Hamels, who has held him to a .219 average in 32 at-bats.
