Padres 4, Nationals 3 (12): Xavier Nady's 12th-inning single plated Jedd Gyorko as visiting San Diego won the opener of its four-game series with Washington.

Gyorko singled against Craig Stammen (0-1) with one out and stole second with two down, advancing to third when catcher Jose Lobaton's throw went into the outfield. Nady, who entered the game hitting .167, followed with a flare up the middle on a 2-0 pitch.

Alex Torres (1-0) recorded the final two outs of the 11th inning before Huston Street gave up a leadoff double to Bryce Harper in the 12th. However, Street recovered to strike out pinch hitter Tyler Moore before Lobaton hit a liner to shortstop Everth Cabrera, who doubled Harper off second base to end the game.

Neither starter factored into the decision, with Jordan Zimmermann of the Nationals yielding three runs in six innings and the Padres' Eric Stults allowing only two runs despite giving up 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Chris Denorifa (2-for-5) was the only San Diego player with multiple hits, while Jayson Werth, Danny Espinosa and Denard Span each had three hits for Washington.

The Padres jumped ahead 3-1 on an RBI double by Seth Smith in the fourth inning and a two-run double by Yasmani Grandal in the sixth. Espinosa's second home run of the season brought the Nationals within a run in the bottom of the sixth and Adam LaRoche's fourth homer tied things in the seventh.

GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego 3B Chase Headley left in the second inning with a right calf strain. ... Espinosa's fourth-inning bunt single was his league-leading sixth bunt hit of the season. ... After Smith left with a groin injury, Padres RP Andrew Cashner played left field for one batter in the 12th inning before being replaced by OF Tommy Medica.
