Yankees 5, Blue Jays 2: Masahiro Tanaka let up a run in 5 1/3 innings in his return from an elbow injury and Brian McCann homered twice to help host New York take three of four from Toronto.

Brett Gardner also homered and Derek Jeter stayed hot on his final homestand with an RBI double as the Yankees remained within 4 1/2 games of the second wild card in the American League. Tanaka (13-4), who was making his first start since July 8, yielded five hits and struck out four while improving to 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA against the Blue Jays.

Jose Reyes had three hits and scored twice to pace Toronto, which dropped 6 1/2 games back in the wild-card race with only seven games to play. Drew Hutchison (10-13) lasted just four innings, giving up two runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Reyes singled and scored on a double play in the first, but McCann smacked a 1-1 offering from Hutchison over the wall in right to tie it in the bottom half. Hutchison stranded runners in scoring position in the second, third and fourth innings before Gardner led off the fifth with his 17th of the year for a 2-1 lead.

Adam Warren cleaned up Tanaka's mess in the sixth and Jeter doubled in Gardner in the seventh before coming home when McCann recorded his 11th career multi-homer game to make it 5-1. Edwin Encarnacion's RBI single in the eighth pulled Toronto closer, but David Robertson got through the ninth for his 38th save as the Blue Jays fell to 14-42 all-time in the new Yankee Stadium.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees CF Jacoby Ellsbury missed his second straight game with a hamstring injury. ... Jeter went 8-for-17 with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs in the series. ... Toronto begins a seven-game homestand to end the season Monday with the first of four against Seattle. New York stays home to host Baltimore for the first of four straight.
