Clint Barmes went 3-for-4 and scored two runs for the Pirates, who avoided a 10th straight loss to the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Cole (5-3) allowed three runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings and two relievers bridged the gap to Jason Grilli, who worked around a two-out single in the ninth for his sixth save and first since coming off the disabled list on May 23.

Yasiel Puig put Los Angeles ahead in the first inning with an RBI double before Alvarez answered in the second with his 10th home run off Dan Haren, who yielded three runs over six frames. The game was tied at 2-2 in the sixth before Martin belted a two-out solo homer into the left-field seats against his former team.

Cole retired 10 in a row before Puig doubled to begin the sixth and scored on Hanley Ramirez’s single to right field. Pittsburgh promptly broke the tie with three runs in the seventh on back-to-back RBI singles by Josh Harrison and Neil Walker off Brandon League (1-2) and a run-scoring double by pinch-hitter Gaby Sanchez off Paul Maholm.

Harrison had two hits and two RBIs and Walker added two hits for the Pirates, who collected 12 hits and snapped a two-game losing skid. Puig, who made an outstanding catch in foul territory in the eighth inning, went 2-for-4 and has reached base in 30 consecutive games.
