Astros 14, Twins 5:
Chris Carter and Jon Singleton hit grand slams and Dexter Fowler and George Springer hit solo shots as visiting Houston routed Minnesota.

Robbie Grossman reached base four times on two hits and two walks and scored three runs as the Astros won for the seventh time in their last eight road games. Jonathan Villar had three hits while Fowler and Singleton each had two as Houston had 13 overall.

Darin Downs (1-0) pitched the final 2 2/3 scoreless innings and was credited with the victory as Houston took two of three from the Twins. Brian Dozier reached base four times for Minnesota on a double and three walks while scoring twice.

Carlos Corporan had a run-scoring single in the second and Fowler led off the third with his homer against Samuel Deduno (2-4) to get Houston started. The Astros struck for three more in the fourth on RBI singles by Villar and Fowler as well as Jose Altuve’s sacrifice fly before Minnesota got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a homer by Eduardo Nunez and tacked on two in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Trevor Plouffe and Josh Willingham.

Houston loaded the bases with none out in the seventh and Carter sent a pitch from Brian Duensing over the wall in right for his first career grand slam to make it 9-3. The Twins scored twice in the bottom of the inning on Willingham’s sacrifice fly and Nunez’s single before Springer led off the eighth with a blast to center and Singleton hit his first career slam in the ninth.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Deduno allowed five runs, three hits and four walks in three-plus innings, while Houston’s Collin McHugh gave up three runs, three hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings. … The Astros optioned RHP Paul Clemens to Triple-A Oklahoma City and recalled LHP Rudy Owens from the same club. … Minnesota formally announced the signing of free-agent 1B/DH Kendrys Morales to a one-year deal and OF Jason Kubel was designated for assignment.
