Mets 3, Cubs 2: Eric Campbell belted a three-run homer and Zack Wheeler matched his season high with 10 strikeouts as host New York won the opener of the four-game series.

Three relievers combined to fan four more batters for the Mets, who rebounded after mustering just four runs en route to getting swept by Washington. David Wright went 0-for-3 to see his 13-game hitting streak come to an end.

Starlin Castro had an RBI single among his two hits and extended his hitting streak to a career high-tying 14 games for Chicago. Travis Wood (7-10) scored on Anthony Rizzo's groundout but remained winless since June 15 after permitting three runs on four hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings.

The Cubs drew first blood in the third inning on Rizzo's groundout before Castro followed with a single up the middle to double the advantage. New York answered as Wright and Lucas Duda walked to lead off the fourth and Campbell deposited a first-pitch fastball from Wood over the wall in left-center field for his second career homer.

Wheeler (8-8) improved to 5-0 in his last eight outings after allowing two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings. Vic Black struck out the lone batter he faced, Jeurys Familia fanned two in the eighth and Jenrry Mejia retired the side in order in the ninth for his 18th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Wheeler tossed a career-best 120 pitches, eclipsing his previous high by one. ... Chicago 3B Luis Valbuena, who is mired in a 1-for-22 stretch, sat out the series opener and isn't expected to start on Saturday. ... Wright is 0-for-13 against the Cubs in four games this season.
