Cubs 3, Rockies 1: Jake Arrieta worked seven strong innings as Chicago clinched a win in the four-game series over visiting Colorado.

Chris Coghlan had two hits and a run scored while Starlin Castro, Justin Ruggiano and Luis Valbuena each drove in a run for the Cubs. Arrieta (6-2) allowed one run on three hits while striking out seven and Hector Rondon worked around two hits in the ninth for his 14th save.

Pedro Hernandez (0-1) pitched five scoreless innings in his season debut before running into trouble in the sixth and ended up charged with three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 frames. Nolan Arenado doubled in a run for the Rockies, who fell for the fourth time in five games.

Hernandez and Arrieta matched zeros through the first five frames before the Cubs gained some traction without much muscle in the sixth, loading the bases on two infield singles and a walk. Castro drew a walk to force in the first run and Ruggiano followed with a sacrifice fly before Valbuena’s RBI groundout capped the three-run frame.

Chris Dickerson singled to begin the seventh for Colorado and scored when Arenado followed with a double to left. A pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs but Arrieta got D.J. LeMahieu to ground out to end the inning and Brian Schlitter worked a scoreless eighth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cubs traded LHP James Russell and INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio to the Atlanta Braves for Class-A C Victor Caratini. … Colorado designated 1B Ryan Wheeler for assignment and optioned RHP Rob Scahill to Triple-A Colorado Springs to make room for Hernandez. … Chicago hits the road for a six-game trip starting Friday at the Los Angeles Dodgers while the Rockies continue their trek by heading for Detroit.
