Diamondbacks 7, Cubs 5: Aaron Hill went 4-for-5 with the tiebreaking two-run triple during a five-run ninth inning as visiting Arizona rallied to defeat Chicago on the 100-year anniversary of the first game played at Wrigley Field.

Hill’s triple dropped just fair inside the right-field line as the Diamondbacks halted a four-game losing skid. Trevor Cahill (1-4) struck out three in two innings of scoreless relief and Addison Reed worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

Arizona trailed 5-2 before loading the bases in the ninth against Pedro Strop (0-2) on two walks and an error before Martin Prado’s two-run single off the second-base bag made it a one-run game. Strop stuck out Paul Goldschmidt but James Russell allowed a tying single to Miguel Montero and Hill followed with the decisive hit off Justin Grimm that gave the Diamondbacks only their second victory in the past 12 games.

Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija was in line for the victory prior to the bullpen collapse and gave up two runs, seven hits, two walks and struck out five in 7 1/3 innings. Justin Ruggiano hit a two-run homer for Chicago but departed with an apparent leg injury after being unable to catch up to Hill’s ninth-inning hit.

Chicago trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth before two singles preceded a run-scoring sacrifice bunt by Darwin Barney, who reached when Goldschmidt made an errant throw to first base and into shallow right field. Samardzija followed with a go-ahead sacrifice fly to put the Cubs ahead and Emilio Bonifacio’s infield out plated the third run of the inning.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to Wrigley Field in the bottom of the fifth inning and both teams wore throwback uniforms from 1914 – the Cubs as the Chicago Federals and the Diamondbacks as the Kansas City Packers. … Arizona OF Mark Trumbo (foot) missed his second consecutive game and OF A.J. Pollock (neck) sat out his third straight start but was used as a pinch runner in the ninth. … Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley struck out seven while giving up five runs (three earned) and four hits in five-plus innings.
