Mariners 4, Cardinals 1: Franklin Gutierrez hit a two-run double and James Paxton pitched six scoreless innings as visiting Seattle snapped its five-game losing streak.

Kendrys Morales added an eighth-inning homer, Carlos Triunfel hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth and Danny Farquhar recorded the final three outs for his 14th save. The Cardinals fell back into a first-place tie with Pittsburgh in the National League Central.

Paxton (2-0) allowed two hits and two walks with five strikeouts while excelling in his second major-league start. St. Louis scored its lone run in the eighth against Charlie Furbush as Matt Carpenter doubled, moved to third on a grounder and scored on the reliever's wild pitch.

Dustin Ackley singled off Michael Wacha (3-1) to start the fifth and Paxton drew a walk. Brad Miller sacrificed the runners over before Gutierrez smacked his two-base hit to left field to make it 2-0.

Wacha yielded two runs, four hits and four walks while striking out seven in five innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Carpenter’s double was his 50th of the season. He is tied with Baltimore’s Manny Machado for the major-league lead. … Miller left in the fifth inning with a strained hamstring and could miss Sunday’s game. … The Cardinals are 6-2 entering the finale of a nine-game homestand.
