Mets 12, Brewers 5:
Kirk Nieuwenhuis recorded career highs of four hits and five RBIs and Zack Wheeler hung around long enough to earn a win as New York topped host Milwaukee.

Juan Lagares drove in three and Ike Davis recorded two RBIs in his return to the majors as the Mets curbed a modest two-game slide. Wheeler (2-1) needed 99 pitches to get through five innings but limited the damage to three runs (one earned) on seven hits.

Carlos Gomez went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Norichika Aoki added three hits for the Brewers, who have dropped eight of 10. Johnny Hellweg (0-2) issued five walks in 3 2/3 innings and was charged with seven runs (three earned) on seven hits to absorb the loss.

New York took advantage of Hellweg’s wildness in the first inning, when Davis walked to load the bases and Nieuwenhuis walked to force in the first run before Lagares’ groundout made it 2-0. Milwaukee got those two runs back in the bottom of the frame but the Mets took advantage of an error and another walk to load the bases again in the second in front of back-to-back RBI singles by Davis and Nieuwenhuis.

Nieuwenhuis added an RBI single in the fourth and scored on John Buck’s single in the sixth as New York pushed the lead to 8-3. Davis, Nieuwenhuis and Lagares each added an RBI in the ninth as the Mets put it away.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Davis was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas prior to the contest and went 3-for-5. RHP Greg Burke was also recalled and RHP Gonzalez Germen was optioned to Las Vegas while RHP Brandon Lyon was designated for assignment. … Brewers LF Ryan Braun (thumb) took batting practice before the game and is expected to hit on the field prior to Saturday’s game. … Nieuwenhuis recorded the first four-hit, five-RBI game for the Mets since David Wright turned the trick on Aug. 10, 2005.
