Miami took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on rookie Marcell Ozuna's RBI single to center with two outs before Brown deposited Sanabia's changeup into the right-field seats in the second. Chris Coghlan kept it a 1-1 game when he ran down Brown's bid for extra bases in left field with two on and two out in the sixth.

Placido Polanco led off the Marlins' sixth inning with a single and three batters later, Ruggiano broke an 0-for-18 slide with an RBI double off the right-field wall. Miami put it away in the eight when Ruggiano delivered an RBI single and Nick Green drove in a pair with a two-out broken-bat blooper to left-center.
