Tigers 7, Blue Jays 3: Reigning American League MVP Miguel Cabrera registered four hits and four RBI, including a three-run homer in the fourth inning that broke the game open, and Detroit held off visiting Toronto.

Torii Hunter contributed three hits, including the 2,000th of his career, and Alex Avila homered as the Tigers handed the Blue Jays their fifth loss in the first seven games. Anibal Sanchez (1-0) struck out eight, allowing five hits and two runs over seven innings to earn the victory.

Melky Cabrera recorded three hits to go over 1,000 for his career and knocked in a run, while Colby Rasmus drilled a solo home run in the ninth for the Blue Jays. Toronto starter Brandon Morrow (0-1) allowed five runs on nine hits and a pair of walks over 3 2/3 innings.

Prince Fielder’s two-out, RBI double to the right-center field gap gave Detroit a 1-0 lead in the first. Don Kelly leaped above the left-field wall and took a home run away from Toronto’s J.P. Arencibia in the second before Avila homered to right field in the bottom of the frame.

Austin Jackson singled with two outs in the fourth and moved to second on Hunter’s base hit to set up Cabrera’s first home run of the season, which barely carried over the right field wall. Cabrera gave the Tigers a 5-1 lead and became the first player to hit 100 home runs at Comerica Park.
