Twins 3, Tigers 2: Eduardo Escobar doubled to the left-center field gap to knock in two runs with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as Minnesota came back to beat visiting Detroit.

Trevor Plouffe walked to lead off the inning and pinch-runner Jamey Carroll moved to third on Brian Dozier’s one-out single to set up Escobar. Minnesota starter Kevin Correia allowed seven hits and two runs with a two strikeouts and a walk over seven innings and Glen Perkins (1-0) pitched the ninth to get the win.

Reigning American League MVP Miguel Cabrera had a pair of RBI singles and Anibal Sanchez pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits for the Tigers. Former Twin Torii Hunter also recorded two hits for Detroit, which lost for only the fifth time in its last 21 games at Target Field.

Austin Jackson walked with two outs, moved to second on Hunter’s single and scored on Cabrera’s base hit to left field to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Omar Infante and Hunter singled in the fifth to set up Cabrera’s opposite-field RBI single with two outs as Detroit doubled its advantage.

The Twins pulled within a run when pinch hitter Wilkin Ramirez doubled down the right field line to score Plouffe in the seventh. Joaquin Benoit walked Plouffe in the ninth and Phil Coke (0-1) came on to take the loss, giving up two of Minnesota’s five hits.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Minnesota P Scott Diamond threw 70 pitches, striking out seven over five innings, in an intrasquad game Tuesday. Diamond, coming off elbow surgery, is scheduled to pitch a Class A game Sunday. … Minnesota’s Joe Mauer came in 4-for-5 against Sanchez, but was hitless in four at-bats against the right-hander Wednesday. … Tigers’ pitchers have struck out 22 batters in the first two contests.
