Juan Pierre lined his first homer since June 23, 2012, a blast just inside the right-field foul pole to give Miami a 1-0 lead in the first. The Reds tied it 1-1 in the fourth when Joey Votto doubled and Bruce singled him home with two outs.

Phillips lined a low fastball from Miami starter Jose Fernandez over the left-field fence in the sixth with two outs to give Cincinnati a 2-1 lead. Fernandez allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five in seven frames, throwing a career-high 99 pitches, and Steve Cishek (1-4) took the loss while yielding three runs in 1 2/3 innings.
