Phillies 2, Braves 0: Cliff Lee stifled Atlanta’s offense on a chilly night at Turner Field, firing eight shutout innings as Philadelphia won its first game of the season.

Lee (1-0) did not post his first victory last year until July 4, but smothered a Braves’ offense that had scored 16 runs in back-to-back victories. Lee struck out eight with no walks and allowed two hits, throwing 78 of his 106 pitches for strikes.

Ben Revere and Chase Utley drove home second-inning runs off Atlanta starter Kris Medlen (0-1). The Braves had won a major-league record 23 consecutive games started by Medlen, who gave up six hits and two runs in five innings with four walks and three strikeouts.

Medlen loaded the bases in the first but escaped unscathed. He was not so fortunate in the second as Philadelphia loaded the bases again before scoring on a fielder’s choice from Revere and Utley’s sacrifice fly.

Lee only surrendered a single from Dan Uggla in the second and a single by Justin Upton in the fourth, retiring 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his first save, ending a game in which no Atlanta baserunner advanced past first base.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Temperature at first pitch was 42 degrees, and a chilly rain fell on and off throughout the game. … Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman, who drove in six runs in the first two games, nearly ended the shutout with a deep fly to the warning track with one out in the seventh. … The Phillies head home to face Kansas City in their home opener on Friday while the Braves host the Cubs.
