Yankees 4, Red Sox 1: CC Sabathia struck out 10 in 7 1/3 innings to outduel Jon Lester as host New York took the opener from rival Boston.

Jayson Nix, Ichiro Suzuki, Kevin Youkilis and Brett Gardner each singled in a run for the Yankees, who snapped a five-game losing streak and moved within a game of the Red Sox for first place in the American League East. Mark Teixeira (wrist) made his season debut and went 0-for-3 with a run scored for New York.

Sabathia (5-4) allowed a run on six hits and did not walk a batter to snap a five-start winless streak. Lester (6-2) was reached for four runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings to drop his second straight decision.

Teixeira walked and Vernon Wells doubled to start the second inning before Nix sent a single into left field to push across the first run. Suzuki served a single out to left-center to cap the two-run frame.

Lester retired seven straight before hitting David Adams with a pitch to lead off the fifth, and he eventually came in to score on Youkilis’ single. The teams traded runs in the seventh and David Robertson got the final two outs of the eighth before Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth and worked around two hits for his 19th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Red Sox CF Jacoby Ellsbury, who set a franchise record with five stolen bases Thursday and was 11-for-23 over the previous five games, was scratched from the lineup because of tightness in his left groin. … New York sent RHP Ivan Nova and LHP Vidal Nuno to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room for Teixeira and Youkilis (back), who had been out since April 28. … Yankees manager Joe Girardi was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing an out call at second base.
