Red Sox 4, Rays 3: Will Middlebrooks doubled in three runs in the ninth as visiting Boston came from behind to steal the rubber game from Tampa Bay.

The Rays led 3-1 heading into the ninth and went to closer Fernando Rodney, who walked the bases loaded with one out. Rodney (1-2) struck out Stephen Drew but could not get Middlebrooks, who lined a 1-2 changeup into the gap in left-center to clear the bases and put the Red Sox on top.

Junichi Tazawa (3-2) worked the final two innings to pick up the win in relief and David Ortiz added an RBI for Boston, which earned back-to-back wins for the first time since May 1-2. Tazawa yielded a pair of singles in the ninth but got James Loney to ground out, ending the game.

Tampa Bay had taken the lead with two runs in the sixth when Desmond Jennings sent a RBI bloop single past a drawn-in infield and into center. Luke Scott tacked on an RBI single to give the Rays a 3-1 cushion.

Ryan Roberts added a solo homer and Alex Cobb allowed a run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings for Tampa Bay. Felix Doubront started for the Red Sox and worked five-plus frames, yielding two runs and three hits while walking six.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to eight games. It was just the second time in that stretch that he failed to record multiple hits. … Boston RHP Joel Hanrahan underwent Tommy John surgery on Thursday to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow and a torn flexor muscle. Hanrahan also had bone spurs removed. He is out for the year. … The Rays placed LHP David Price (triceps strain) on the 15-day DL and recalled LHP Alex Torres from Class AAA Durham. Torres came on after Rodney issued his fourth walk of the inning and retired the only batter he faced.
