Trevor Cahill (6-10) yielded two runs over five innings and Brad Ziegler worked a perfect ninth for his eighth save for the Diamondbacks, who remained seven games behind the Cincinnati Reds for the National League’s second wild card.

Pablo Sandoval, who belted three home runs against San Diego on Wednesday, began the scoring with an RBI triple in the fourth. Hector Sanchez followed with a sacrifice fly to score Sandoval, who went 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Arizona answered in the fifth against Ryan Vogelsong (3-5), who recorded two quick outs before allowing the next six batters to reach safely. Goldschmidt sparked the rally with his double and scored on Martin Prado’s two-base hit before Aaron Hill delivered an RBI single.

Vogelsong surrendered four runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings for the Giants, who were held to one extra-base hit after blasting a season-high six home runs on Wednesday. San Francisco threatened in the seventh, putting two runners on with one out before Will Harris induced an inning-ending double play from Brandon Belt.
