Diamondbacks 10, Cardinals 9 (16): Cliff Pennington's walk-off RBI single in the 16th inning lifted host Arizona in the longest game in Chase Field history.

After lead-off hitter Jason Kubel walked on four pitches, pinch hitter Ian Kennedy - Monday's winning pitcher - sacrificed him to second before Pennington's third hit ended the game, which took 5 hours, 32 minutes to complete. Fernando Salas (0-1) took the loss.

Josh Collmenter (1-0) worked five innings and threw 77 pitches after tossing 24 on Tuesday. Paul Goldschmidt, Gerardo Parra and Martin Prado had three hits apiece and each homered. Aaron Hill added two hits, including an RBI single which tied it 8-8 in the eighth.

Yadier Molina homered to break a 7-7 tie in the seventh among his three RBIs while Daniel Descalso recorded four hits, including a two-run double, for the Cardinals. Matt Adams added three hits as the teams combined for 33 hits and used 15 pitchers - eight by St. Louis.

Each team scored in the 12th inning. Rookie Pete Kozma fouled off four straight pitches before ripping an RBI single to give St. Louis a short-lived 9-8 lead before Prado delivered a sacrifice fly against closer Mitchell Boggs with runners at second and third and one out in the bottom half.

GAME NOTEBOOK: RHP Brandon McCarthy made his Diamondbacks debut and yielded six runs and nine hits in five-plus innings. He was beaned by a line drive in his previous regular-season start in September and eventually underwent a two-hour surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. ... The home runs by Goldschmidt and Prado - his first in a Diamondbacks uniform - each bounced off the top of the left-field wall and into the seats. ... There were 513 pitches thrown.
