Joyce also registered a two-run homer and an RBI double while Kelly Johnson started the ninth-inning outburst with a home run off Orioles closer Jim Johnson (1-4). Ben Zobrist tacked on a two-run double in the ninth to help Alex Torres (1-0) gain the victory after pitching four hitless innings.

Johnson gave up five runs on three hits and two walks to blow his second consecutive save for the Orioles after converting 35 straight.

Jones hammered a two-run homer to left field and Chris Davis followed immediately with a solo blast to center to cap a four-run first inning for Baltimore. Davis, Jones, Nate McLouth and J.J. Hardy each had a pair of hits for the Orioles.

The Rays pulled within 4-3 in the third on Yunel Escobar’s RBI double and a long two-run blast by Joyce to right field. Hardy ripped an RBI double in the bottom of the third and Jones pushed across another with a fielder’s choice in the fourth for a 6-3 edge and Baltimore led 6-4 going into the ninth.
