Athletics 3, Dodgers 0: Brandon McCarthy allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings to win his sixth consecutive decision.

Seth Smith and Jonny Gomes had RBI singles in a three-run first inning to help Oakland win for the sixth time in seven games.

McCarthy (6-3) showed no rust from an 11-day layoff due to shoulder soreness, retiring the final eight batters he faced to remain unbeaten since April 21. He struck out five and walked one.

Grant Balfour pitched a scoreless eighth before Ryan Cook worked out of a jam in the ninth for his fourth save.

Dodgers starter Aaron Harang (5-4) was all over the place, walking a career-high eight batters and allowing three runs on three hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two batters in each of the first four innings before he was yanked with two outs in the fourth.

The Athletics couldn't take advantage of 10 walks, stranding 12 runners, but improved to 10-2 at home against the Dodgers in interleague play.

Smith singled home Coco Crisp with Oakland's first run and Jemile Weeks also came home when center fielder Tony Gwynn made an error on the play. Gomes' two-out single plated Smith with the third run.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Crisp had two hits, walked twice and stole three bases while lifting his batting average above .200 for the first time since April 30. ... Oakland RHP Andrew Carignan underwent successful Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Tuesday. New York Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek performed the procedure, which typically has a recovery time of 12-18 months. Carignan was 1-1 record with a 4.66 ERA in 11 relief appearances this season. ... Harang is the first Dodgers starter to walk eight in a game since Edwin Jackson in September 2003. He also had the most walks by a Dodgers pitcher who failed to last five innings since Sandy Koufax in 1955. ... A's RHP Bartolo Colon is likely headed to the disabled list with a right oblique strain. Tyson Ross could be recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take Colon's next start.
