Padres 3, Cardinals 2: Clayton Richard continued his home dominance with seven strong innings and San Diego swept St. Louis for the first time in 17 years.

Logan Forsythe homered and Yasmani Grandal singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as the Padres completed the three-game sweep - their first against the Cardinals since August 1995.

Richard (13-12) won his fifth consecutive home start, allowing two runs on three hits as the Padres improved to 17-5 in their last 22 games. Richard's only mistake was allowing a two-run homer to Matt Carpenter in the sixth.

Padres closer Luke Gregerson stranded the tying run at third base in the ninth inning for his seventh save.

Kyle Lohse (14-3) had his eight-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time since July 13 despite striking out a season-high eight in six innings. He allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits but could not prevent St. Louis from losing for the sixth time in seven games.

The defeat kept the Cardinals one game ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the National League's second wild card spot. The Dodgers dropped a 3-2 decision to Arizona.

Richard carried a one-hit shutout into the sixth inning, but Jon Jay singled to lead off and Carpenter crushed a homer to deep right to tie it at 2-2.

San Diego answered with two outs in the bottom of the inning when Chase Headley doubled and scored on Grandal's single to right for a 3-2 lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Lohse was denied in his bid to earn a career high-tying ninth straight win, something he last achieved in 2008. ... Forsythe's homer extended his hitting streak to six games. He has hit safely in 14 of his last 15. ... Carpenter's homer was his first since July 27, ending a 34-game drought. ... Richard entered Wednesday's start having allowed two runs over 24 innings in his last three starts at Petco Park.
