Padres 9, Pirates 8:
Chase Headley homered from both sides of the plate for the first time in his career and had five RBIs as visiting San Diego won its fifth consecutive game.

Headley, who was batting from the right side, hit his second homer of the contest in the seventh inning. The two-run shot off Tony Watson (5-2) gave the Padres a 9-8 lead and helped San Diego win in Pittsburgh for the 10th consecutive time.

The Padres trailed 7-1 after four innings before overcoming the large deficit and handing the Pirates their fifth loss in eight games. Headley’s other homer was a three-run shot in the fifth.

Pittsburgh used a five-run fourth to take the six-run advantage. Travis Snider hit a three-run shot off Edinson Volquez for his first homer for the Pirates since being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays. Pedro Alvarez added a two-run single later in the inning.

San Diego recovered quickly with a six-run fifth against James McDonald. Jesus Guzman doubled in two runs and Alexi Amarista singled home a third before Headley smacked the three-run tying homer deep into the right-center field bleachers.

Brad Brach (1-2) gave up one run in two innings for San Diego while notching his first major-league victory. Huston Street hurled a perfect ninth for his 21st save in as many opportunities but suffered a left calf injury while covering first base on the final play of the game.

The win improved the Padres to 27-9 lifetime at PNC Park.

Amarista homered in the first for San Diego. Starling Marte had a run-scoring single in the second for Pittsburgh and Garrett Jones homered in the third to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

McDonald allowed seven runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Volquez allowed six runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out three.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Headley has three career multi-homer games, all coming this season. … McDonald has an 8.71 ERA in six starts since the All-Star break. He had a 2.37 ERA in 17 starts prior to the break. … The Padres recalled C Nick Hundley from Triple-A Tucson and sent down C Eddy Rodriguez. … Pittsburgh has hit exactly 800 homers at PNC Park since it opened in 2001.
