Rolen’s bases-loaded single was Cincinnati’s lone hit of the inning and gave the Reds a one-game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Central.

Homer Bailey (8-6) gave up two runs (one earned) and nine hits in eight innings to win his third straight decision. Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the ninth for his 13th save in 17 opportunities.

Joey Votto walked with one out in the eighth and Brandon Phillips was hit by a pitch to finish the night of St. Louis starter Jake Westbrook (7-8). Marc Rzepczynski retired Jay Bruce on a ground ball and Ryan Ludwick was walked intentionally by Mitchell Boggs before Rolen’s decisive hit to right-center field.

Yadier Molina had a run-scoring double in the second to give the Cardinals the early lead.

Cincinnati staged a two-out uprising in the third to score twice. Chris Heisey singled and narrowly beat Rafael Furcal’s relay throw home to score on Votto’s double down the left-field line, and Phillips followed with a run-scoring single to give the Reds a 2-1 advantage.

Molina deposited a low curveball over the left-field fence in the sixth to tie the score on his career-best 15th homer of the campaign.

Westbrook was charged with four runs and nine hits in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one.
