Reds 2, Phillies 1: Jay Bruce belted a two-run homer for his third blast in as many contests and Mat Latos tossed seven solid innings as Cincinnati snapped a six-game home losing skid to Philadelphia.
Ryan Hanigan and Bruce collected two hits apiece for the Reds, who activated stud first baseman Joey Votto off the disabled list prior to the contest. The 2010 National League MVP, who did not play in the game, had been sidelined since July 15 with damaged cartilage in his left knee.
Cincinnati retained its lead 8 1/2-game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central while reducing its magic number to 18.
Jimmy Rollins recorded his 2,000th career hit with a one-out double in the fifth inning. Domonic Brown worked a bases-loaded walk in the fourth for the Phillies, who fell for just the second time in their last six games.
After the Reds made two quick outs in the sixth inning, Ryan Ludwick singled to shallow center before Bruce deposited a changeup from Kyle Kendrick (8-10) into the third row in right field. The line-drive homer was Bruce's 31st of the season - and fourth in five games.
The modest offense proved just enough for Latos (12-4), who posted his first career win in three decisions versus Philadelphia. Latos permitted the lone run on four hits and struck out six.
Jonathan Broxton retired the side in order in the eighth before Aroldis Chapman struck out a pair in the ninth for his 35th save.
Kendrick saw his career-best four-start winning streak come to an end after yielding just two runs on six hits in as many innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rollins became the 271st player and 30th switch hitter in Major League Baseball history to reach the 2,000-hit plateau. ... Bruce has homered in three straight games on three separate occasions this season. He had accomplished the feat in four consecutive games from April 26-29. ... Phillies 2B Chase Utley once again worked out at third base prior to the game. ... Latos went 0-for-1 at the plate to snap his six-game hitting streak. ... The teams have split their first six meetings this season.
