Nationals 3, Phillies 0: Ross Detwiler allowed three hits in seven innings to outduel Cole Hamels and Jayson Werth drove in a run in his return to the lineup as host Washington avoided a three-game sweep.

Adam LaRoche homered and drove in two runs and Werth finished 1-for-3 for the Nationals, who totaled five runs in the three-game series.

Detwiler (6-4) walked two, struck out three and threw 54 of his 88 pitches for strikes. The right-hander induced 11 groundouts and retired the last 14 batters he faced.

LaRoche gave Detwiler all the support he would need in the second inning when he got a first-pitch fastball and sent it into the first row of the upper deck in right field for his 20th home run and a 1-0 lead.

Washington got two more runs in the third, with Ryan Zimmerman, Michael Morse and LaRoche hitting consecutive singles and Werth following with an RBI groundout. Werth, who had been out since May 7 with a broken left wrist, started in center field and batted sixth.

The Phillies had their best chance to score in the second inning but Bryce Harper threw out John Mayberry Jr. at the plate for the second out of the inning and Detwiler struck out Hamels with a man on second to end the threat.

Sean Burnett pitched a perfect eighth inning and Tyler Clippard worked around a pair of walks in the ninth for his 21st save.

Hamels (11-6) struck out nine and walked one in seven innings while yielding three runs and eight hits. The left-hander has one win in his last seven starts.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Washington placed RHP Henry Rodriguez (back) on the 15-day disabled list to clear a spot for Werth. … Philadelphia reportedly placed LHP Cliff Lee on waivers. … Phillies 1B Ryan Howard was given the start off after managing one hit and striking out nine times in his last 14 at-bats. He struck out as a pinch hitter to end the game. … The Nationals continue their homestand on Friday with the opener of a four-game series against the Miami Marlins. Philadelphia heads home to face the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-game set.
