Cubs 6, Mets 1:
Travis Wood outdueled Johan Santana with seven scoreless innings and Joe Mather hit a two-run homer as host Chicago snapped a four-game slide and sent New York to its third straight setback.

The Cubs added four runs in the seventh inning thanks to a series of errors by the Mets, who are in the midst of their fourth three-game losing streak this month.

Wood (2-3) allowed five hits and walked one while striking out six in matching his longest outing of the season. The 25-year-old left-hander has allowed one run in 13 innings over his last two starts.

Santana matched Wood through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth, when he issued a two-out walk to Geovany Soto. Mather followed and took a 1-1 fastball into the first row in left-center for his fourth homer and a 2-0 lead.

Santana (5-4) was charged with two runs and five hits while walking three and striking out six in six innings.

The Cubs opened up a tight game in the seventh, starting the rally when New York third baseman David Wright tried to snatch a pop-up near home plate but ended up missing it for a three-base error. Jon Rauch struck out the next batter but Darwin Barney sent a short fly into right that glanced off Lucas Duda’s sliding body for another three-base miscue.

Barney came in to score when Ronny Cedeno made the third error of the inning, missing a ground ball at second base with the infield drawn in.

Ike Davis hit his ninth home run in the ninth to avoid the shutout.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Rauch ended up being charged with four unearned runs despite not allowing a hit in one-third of an inning … None of New York’s previous losing streaks this month made it to a fourth setback … The Cubs, who own the worst record in the majors, improved to 7-16 in June … Chicago recalled top prospect Anthony Rizzo, who will make his season debut on Tuesday. The first baseman is batting .342 and leading the Pacific Coast League with 23 homers.
