Rays 5, Blue Jays 4 (11): B.J. Upton laced a walk-off double down the left-field line in the 11th and newcomer Drew Sutton continued to impress as host Tampa Bay claimed a series win over Toronto.

Rich Thompson absorbed a hit-by-pitch leading off the bottom of the 11th and Carlos Pena struck out swinging in front of Upton, who took a 2-2 sinker on the inside corner from Darren Oliver (0-2) and pulled it down the line, chasing Thompson home.

Jake McGee (1-1) pitched a scoreless inning to get the win.

James Shields cruised through the first seven innings but ran into trouble in the eighth. He yielded a one-out double to Jose Bautista before being replaced by Joel Peralta. Edwin Encarnacion greeted Peralta by taking a 2-1 curveball out to left-center for his 14th homer, knotting the game at 4-4.

Shields lasted 7 1/3 innings and was charged with three runs - two earned - on seven hits while walking one and striking out 10.

Bautista continued on his current tear with his 12th home run - a solo blast - in the first.

But the Rays jumped on top in the bottom of the frame when Sutton, who was batting fourth for Tampa Bay two days after being picked up for cash from the Pittsburgh Pirates, doubled to deep center off Ricky Romero to score Pena and Matt Joyce.

The Rays added two runs on RBI groundouts in the third and Toronto cut it to 4-2 on Yan Gomes’ sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Romero struggled with his command, issuing a career-high seven walks, and struck out seven while allowing four runs on two hits in six innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Sutton was making his first career start as the cleanup hitter in manager Joe Maddon’s unconventional lineup, which also has slugger Pena hitting leadoff. … Romero ranks second in the majors with 37 walks and has issued 21 free passes in 23 1/3 innings over his last four starts. … Bautista has driven in at least one run in four straight games and has multiple hits in three of the last four.
