Athletics 7, Red Sox 1: Coco Crisp homered among three hits and A.J. Griffin worked seven strong innings as host Oakland beat up on Boston again en route to its eighth straight victory.
Brandon Inge added a two-run double and Derek Norris drove in a pair of runs for the Athletics, who maintained the top spot in the American League wild card race. Oakland, which beat the Red Sox 20-2 on Friday, is two games ahead of the second-place Baltimore Orioles and 3 1/2 games clear of the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Athletics got three home runs and 13 RBIs from former Boston players in Friday’s drubbing. Crisp, who was the only Oakland player not to record a hit in that game, finally got to his former team in the bottom of the first on Saturday. Crisp sent a lead-off home run out to left-center and added a stolen base while finishing a triple shy of the cycle.
Griffin (4-0) was perfect through 4 2/3 innings until Jarrod Saltalamacchia bunted against the shift, sending an infield single toward the vacated third base position. Griffin, who was activated off the disabled list to make the start, ended up yielding one run on three hits while striking out five.
Felix Doubront (10-7) lasted only three innings for the Red Sox. Oakland exploded for four runs in the third off the left-hander, with Yoenis Cespedes and Norris sandwiching RBI singles around Inge’s two-run double.
Dustin Pedroia drove in the lone run for Boston, which has dropped five straight.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Inge, who was activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, was pulled after three innings with an aggravation of the sore right shoulder that had landed him on the DL. … The Athletics recalled OF Collin Cowgill and INF Brandon Hicks. … The Red Sox activated LHP Rich Hill from the DL. Hill struck out two in two-thirds of an inning. … Boston has already clinched a losing road trip, dropping the first five of its nine-game west coast swing. … Oakland (75-57) has already eclipsed its win total from 2011, when it went 74-88.
