Red Sox 8, Royals 6: Pedro Ciriaco homered among three hits and James Loney drove in a run in his first game since joining the team as host Boston came back to beat Kansas City.

Dustin Pedroia added a solo blast and joined Jacoby Ellsbury, Cody Ross and Mike Aviles each with two hits and an RBI for the Red Sox, who recorded their first win since the trade sending away Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett was finalized on Saturday.

Pedro Beato (1-0), who was acquired in the Kelly Shoppach trade last week, was called up from the minors and earned the win in his first appearance for Boston, allowing two runs on three hits in two-plus innings of relief.

The Red Sox grabbed a 2-0 lead early but the Royals jumped on top with a four-run fourth. Lorenzo Cain had the big blast in the inning, turning on a 1-0 fastball from Boston starter Felix Doubront and lining it off the back wall of the “Green Monster” seats above the left field wall.

Ciriaco sent a solo shot - his second - into the Monster seats in the fifth to cut it to 4-3 and Ellsbury followed with a single, moved to second on a groundout and stole third. Loney, who was the lone major league player coming back in the trade, came through with Ellsbury on third, sending a single back up the middle for his first hit and RBI.

Ellsbury drove in the go-ahead run in the following frame, lining a single to right that glanced off the tip of first baseman Eric Hosmer’s glove before dropping for an RBI.

Will Smith (4-6) was charged with five runs (four earned) and six hits in five-plus innings while striking out seven in the loss.

The Red Sox took advantage of some poor defense to add two more runs in the seventh and Pedroia’s 12 homer provided some insurance in the eighth after Kansas City had cut it back to a one-run game.

With Alfredo Aceves suspended and Andrew Bailey unavailable, Mark Melancon got the call in the ninth and earned his first save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was ejected in the fifth inning by umpire Dan Bellino for arguing a call at first base. It was his fifth ejection of the season. … Kansas City general manager Dayton Moore made it clear that the team is not scouting 50-year-old Roger Clemens. Royals personnel were at Clemens’ start for an independent league team on Saturday but only as personal guests of the former star. … Boston is expected to make a decision on whether or not to shut down DH David Ortiz (Achilles) on Sunday. … Red Sox OF Che-Hsuan Lin was sent to Class AAA Pawtucket to clear a spot for Beato.
