Royals 10, Red Sox 9 (12): Tony Abreu got into a game for the first time in over a week and made it count, singling in the go-ahead run in the 12th inning to lead visiting Kansas City past depleted Boston.

The Royals got to Junichi Tazawa (0-1) with two outs in the 12th as Jeff Francoeur drew a walk and Eric Hosmer doubled to left. Abreu, who had not played since Aug. 17, followed with his second hit of the night - a single to left that plated Francoeur.

The late end capped a long day for the Red Sox, who blew a six run lead after trading away Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto and Josh Beckett in a nine-player deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier in the afternoon.

Francisco Bueno (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief to earn his first major-league win and Greg Holland picked up his seventh save with a scoreless bottom of the 12th.

Boston jumped out on top quickly, pounding Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie for seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings. The Red Sox erased a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the second as Mauro Gomez hit his first career home run and Mike Aviles followed back-to-back singles with a three-run blast.

Gomez, who was starting at first base for Gonzalez, went 4-for-6 with three RBIs, singling in runs in the third and fourth as the Red Sox built the lead to 9-3.

Starter Aaron Cook was lifted after six innings and the Boston bullpen could not hold the large lead.

Kansas City sent 11 men to the plate in a six-run seventh inning. Andrew Miller was the first out of the bullpen and ended up charged with four runs while Mark Melancon was tagged for two more and left-hander Craig Breslow allowed a pair of inherited runners to score.

Mike Moustakas had the big hit in the frame, lofting a fly ball to the corner in right that Cody Ross overran, giving Moustakas a two-run triple and knotting it at 9-9.

Alex Gordon drove in four runs and Billy Butler added three hits and two RBIs for the Royals.
