Red Sox 10, White Sox 1:
Cody Ross hit a pair of three-run homers while Adrian Gonzalez homered and drove in four runs as host Boston spoiled the major-league debut of Pedro Hernandez and pounded visiting Chicago.

Felix Doubront (10-4) pitched six strong innings and Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Red Sox, who have taken two of three in the four-game series and four of six since the All-Star break.

Hernandez (0-1) became the 10th rookie to pitch in a game for the White Sox this season and did not make much of his opportunity. The 23-year-old left-hander was lit up for eight runs and 12 hits in four-plus innings, striking out a pair and walking one.

Ellsbury doubled and scored on Gonzalez’s single in the first to tie it at 1-1 and Boston broke the game open in the third inning. Ellsbury and Crawford led off with back-to-back singles in front of Ross, who hammered a 1-1 fastball down the line in left, sneaking it just inside the pole for the three-run blast.

Ross struck again in the following frame. Pedro Ciriaco and Ellsbury reached with singles and Crawford popped out in front of Ross, who went to left-center this time for his 15th homer and a 7-1 cushion.

Gonzalez followed with a solo blast - his eighth - off Hernandez to make it back-to-back shots.

Doubront was charged with one run and four hits while walking three and striking out two.

Gonzalez added a two-run single in the sixth and finished with three hits to raise his average .296, its highest point since April. The first baseman is 9-for-16 over the last four games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Red Sox placed DH David Ortiz (right Achilles) on the disabled list and recalled INF Mauro Gomez from Triple-A Pawtucket. Ortiz got a second opinion on his Achilles on Wednesday and the result was the same, no tear or rupture. He will be shut down for 10 days before resuming baseball activities. … Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia (thumb) is expected to be activated off the DL on Thursday. … Wednesday marked the 2,000th game with the White Sox for All-Star Paul Konerko. That ranks third in franchise history.
